NEET UG counselling: MCC and state counselling
Counselling is where your rank turns into a seat. There is not one counselling but several, run by different authorities. Each publishes its own schedule, so keep the official sites open.
Who runs what
- MCC (Medical Counselling Committee): the all India quota, which is 15% of seats in government medical colleges, plus deemed universities, central universities and some other institutions. Official site: mcc.nic.in.
- State counselling: the remaining state quota seats in government colleges and the seats in private colleges, run by each state's own authority. State rules, such as domicile and state-specific reservation, apply.
You can take part in both. A seat taken in one round can affect what you can do in another, so read each counselling's rules on joining, resigning and fees.
Typical steps
- Register on the counselling website and pay the registration fee if one is charged.
- Fill in your choices (courses and colleges) in the order you prefer.
- Lock your choices before the deadline.
- See the seat allotment result.
- Report to the college with documents and pay the fee, or follow the instruction for free exit or upgrade.
- Repeat for the next round if you want an upgrade and the rules allow it.
Documents to keep ready
- NEET UG admit card and scorecard.
- Class 10 and Class 12 certificates and mark sheets.
- Photo ID, passport-size photographs and category or disability certificates if they apply.
- Domicile or residence proof for state counselling.
Be careful
- Register only on the official counselling websites. Agents who promise a seat are not official.
- Round names, number of rounds and fee rules change every year.
- We publish counselling dates only when an official notice states them.
Get notice of changes with exam alerts. For the exam dates themselves, see NEET UG exam date.
